![]() Currently his work is displayed in various museums throughout Europe, the United States, China and Japan. He originally became a famous photographer from his Painter of the Eiffel Tower which was featured in Life Magazine in 1953. Having these experiences helped him establish extrinsic ethos, for he knew how to capture moments in these settings, and knew when to take advantage of opportunities. Before this photograph was taken, he was given assignments in war zones, protests, various movements in Asia, Africa, France and the United States. Marc Riboud has done a terrific job establishing his ethos. When looked at objectively, even though it inspired and appealed to a majority of the American people, the song's main argument is fallacious. This is another blatant example of a non sequitur within the song. This war was not a war of self-defense, but rather a move to contain the spread of Communism in other areas of the world. Later in the song, Dudley stresses the importance of having the world know that Americans "will protect shore." This quite literally is an irrational claim fighting a proxy war on the other side of the planet is entirely different from protecting your land. Dudley's thought process here "does not follow," but it definitely appeals to the patriotic sentiment that the majority of the country was feeling at the time. This is not to say that there are no valid reasons to fight in Vietnam, but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor certainly isn't a logical justification. It does not make much sense to fight a war in Vietnam because we were involved in other conflicts in the previous decades with other nations. This could certainly be considered an argument to the people, a non sequitur, or even a bandwagon claim. ![]() In the song, he responds to peace protesters, asking "Did they forget Pearl Harbor and Korea?" Although this line would definitely appeal to the audience's emotions (pride, patriotism, etc), it does not really make sense. ![]() This is a valid opinion it is his reasoning that raises some red flags. In sum, Dudley argues that the Vietnam War is justified and necessary for a variety of reasons. Barton, founder the American Red Cross, declared that the war put the American woman “at least fifty years in advance of the normal position which continued peace would have assigned her.As I'm sure many of you thought when you listened to Dave Dudley's "What We're Fighting For" (if you did actually listen to it), the song's message is essentially flawed. Women such as Clara Barton awoke to fresh opportunities inspired by their war experiences. Overall, the work women performed during the war inspired new ways of thinking about women’s place in society. Harriet Tubman, the famous Underground Railroad “conductor,” led an armed expedition in South Carolina, for example, and Susie King Taylor was an army nurse. Before emancipation, the Civil War worsened the condition of many enslaved women in the South, though African American women from various regions helped the Union or abolitionist cause. Native American women dealt with divided tribal loyalties in the aftermath of forced removal from ancestral lands. The war affected different groups of women differently. Unknown numbers of women fought as soldiers by concealing their identities and enlisting as men. Others nursed soldiers (Louisa May Alcott, author of the beloved novel Little Women, worked as an army nurse), spied on the enemy, cooked and laundered for enlisted men, and served as uniformed battlefield helpers called vivandières. Some raised money and supplies through ladies’ aid and soldiers’ aid societies as well as the US Sanitary Commission, a private agency that operated across the North and became critical to the Union victory. Many also contributed to the Union or Confederacy. ![]() Many became providers for their families, managing farms and businesses while male relatives served in the military. The American Civil War brought women new responsibilities on the battlefield and at home.
